Fed: Faulkner says Senate reforms on the cards
Labor Senate leader JOHN FAULKNER has outlined Senate reforms his party believes couldbe successful at a referendum.
Senator FAULKNER said yesterday that the changes should involve a joint sitting ofparliament to consider disputed legislation, coupled with four-year terms.
He says Labor believes the way to reform the Senate is to address Senate powers.
He says a weakening of those powers is not necessarily a bad thing.
And he says the reform proposal advocated by Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD could be abused, and could destroy the Senate as a genuine house of review.
Mr HOWARD has proposed a joint sitting of parliament after three months to pass disputedlegislation.
